OKAY moving on+ scans? + lulusale

Fri Mar 18, 2011, 1:15 PM
Lulu.com sale, kinda.  Use the code GROUND to get free shipping, so basically that saves you a good 5 bucks.  Not to mention the 10% discount that's already up there.

My book! The Drowned !!  Is thar!  No, HERE!  Bing--> www.lulu.com/spotlight/heather…

And apologies for all the madness this week.  I really need to not type journals when I'm so low on sleep, or maybe my delusional self-absorbed rantings are entertaining?  Uh oh, there I go again...

- - -

Scanning pencil stuff is terrible.  The scanner light always seems to pick up on the flecks of reflective pencil shit and make the scan all grainy and messy.  Is this a fatal error between real life implement and machine?  Am I doomed to just never share pencil stuff on DA without it looking like a 2 year old vomited in photoshop? D:

And in conclusion to the fan thing below, I guess I'll just do w/e I feel like, and uh, worry about appearing like an incorrigible attention whore later. :|

- - -

Sleep is for the weak.  I'm over it.  Pardon my whining.  I did get hella shit done today.   And only zombie'd out around 7ish, haha.  I was staring at the wall and someone's all, "Hellooo Heather?  Customer?"  @_@  Oops.  Now on to greater things.

First, I ponder.  Fandoms.  Are they too much?  When teetering on the edge of a great, massive fandom full of rabid, horny and disgusting teenagers who draw anime pencil scratches and horrible blob faces, is it worth it to lean in?  Should I just jump on this expansive and often terrible fan train?  Fan art?  Fan fiction?  The tshirt?  Setting up my laptop to represent part of the story I like (Oh shit, I already did that)... Or is it better to admire from afar?

Would you even be INTERESTED in art from some crap you've never heard of?   No I'm not talking about Dead Space, SORRY YOU HAVE TO LIVE WITH THAT OBSESSION.  I'm referring in my ramblings to the long...long...long... webcomic Homestuck.  SO.  What I'm wondering, do I have room in my life for another?  Or should I swallow this growing bead of fangirlism and just go eat an apple? Is it worth liking something to you guys if like, a billion other people like it?

Ah the philosophical preponderances of life on the internet.  Sigh!

In other news, for you writer folk who are in the hizzle all up in here, go give denlm a hug and a pat on the back, for she's had a loss in the family and needs all your support whether she wants it or not, damn it.  Yeah.  Representin' my bizatches with hugs!

Now on to post some Objects in Space for all you reading folks.  I like you guys!!  Don't forget to be my tweep on twitter, too... yeah.  YEAH!!

I normally up the contrast a little bit and play with the brightness. That said, I also sometimes colourise the picture, or overlay a parchment texture onto it. Just so it doesn't look so unfinished.

I don't know about all scanners, but mine has a place to adjust for line art or photo, and different types of paper (plain, magazine, semi gloss). You do have to set it for black/white only to get very good results from pencil. oh, and dpi, duh. lol I can't photoshop for crap, but I like pushing buttons.

My scanner is from the year 2000 :| It has dpi settings, but messing with the contrast etc doesn't improve its ability to NOT reflect off shiny graphite bits. D: Wahhhh. Maybe I should try just bw. Or I'll be lazy and get over it I don't knowwwww.

I tell myself I don't care about "fandom", but considering that most of mine are too erudite for the foaming masses to have noticed yet, I'm not sure how much weight my opinion carries. (And for the ones that are moderately mainstream, I tend to stay the heck out of the online communities.) All right, I'll say it- I'm a snob. <_< I don't actually give a crap about your anime knockoff illustrations for your badly written fanfic about Legolas's sister because I am more than 13 years old now kthx. *shudder* But give me something that's actually well drawn or (more rarely) well written, and I will enjoy it.

In short, if you must be a rabid fangirl, be a moderately talented one. Give the world something besides a badly-copied pencil version of promo art on a piece of notebook paper. (Not that I would EVER accuse you of contemplating such a thing. This is merely a sweeping generalization, and ...WOW end rant now. That wasn't going to be quite so vehement :XD:)

Yeah, for the most part I shun fan communities. I think I will this time. I'll just enjoy the comic in the peace of my own home, and perhaps in the da group and that's it. The things like forums scare me too much. D: But I have ACTUALLY TRIED to find Dead Space fan forums and stuff. There really isn't a faniverse out there. xD I'm all alone! *floats away*

I shall endeavour to be talented. I looked up some Homestuck char and 99% of the stuff is just traces of screencaps from the flash videos, or him just standing there looking like a grumpy log. How boring! Part of my moral dilemma is: do I want to remedy this void in the fan universe with my own art because 1. I like the character or 2. I like the attention? hahahaha.

VEHEMENCE IS WELCOME!!

The answer to your question is Yes. <_< The two are not mutually exclusive.

People are CRAZY RABID about rebuilding his armor. And drawing the space zombies, necromorphs. But caring about how many hugz Isaac gets with his dead girlfriend before zombie Nicole eats his face? Very small contingent. :(

I don't want to be an attention whore aaaargh!!

I think you're putting way too much thought into this. If it bothers you so much, don't post your fanarts?

All the characters hang out in the mental hospital (a-la 12 Monkeys, or Girl: Interrupted) and just do random shit (play scrabble, watch tv, have a breakdown, drool in a corner, play piano, cry...) until I call them.

Why is everyone so fascinated with Homestuck? I spent five minutes with it and was bored by it. Perhaps it gets better later...
I don't like fan anything, really. I mean, sure, I'll look at some stuff sometimes. Sometimes. I don't care for experiencing people's second-hand fantasies.
Whatever you want, though. My personal opinion: I found getting over-fascinated with something to the point of gooey fan-dom was stifling to my personal creativity.

It's incredibly boring until you devote hours and hours of time you can never get back into it. I think that's why I kept going. I was like "eh may as well," so I read (uh, stare?) a few pages a day. My theory is whatever pointless bullshit it started out as, at some point the author/artist fellow decided to insert an overarching plot, and probably then realized his calling, cuz it went from no one gives a fuck to everyone gives a fuck quite fast.

And yeah, second hand fantasies. That's a good word for it. There's a flipside tho to just sharing shit you like with people who like the same thing. Dead Space has like a 5 person fan base, but I could draw scary sad people ALL DAY because the aesthetic and plot just make me so happy. But the Homestuck fandom is like I said, rabid and wrong and kind of evil. I don't want my creativity to be stifled either. :| INSPIRED YEAH. Shot down by weird skullfucking fans, eeghhh no.

Oh the topics the internet presents to us! Gasp. What is one to do!

I think I'll save my hours from Homestuck. I really shouldn't read another webcomic - I read twenty regularly. REALLY don't need another obsession...

I thought it was a good word too. Thought myself to be rather clever when I thought of it. Eh heh...
Oh sure, I know what you mean about being able to share an interest with people. It's quite fun. I rarely experience it because I miss out on everything everyone likes all the time... but! I digress.
Stay away from skull-fucking fans. It just makes sense to not be associated with such folk.

Yeah... internet topics. What should one do...?
One should... go. And do... life. Things. Non-internety things.

I haven't read a web comic in at least 2 years. xD Last one was the esteemed Vampirates, which died in a fire because of lazy artist, like most good comics do, so.

And rule no.1 is attend reality before the internet. Rule no.2 is ignore reality as much as possible. Conflict!! And I have lots of life. Lots of non internetty things. But I like it here! I'm not leaving, damn it!

Maybe I'm afraid anything I make will be tainted by the wealths of badness and odd fetishes. But I may go for it. I'm really enjoying this comic now that I know what the fuck is supposed to be going on. It was a funny turning point. Read a summery and am like "OOHHHHHHH."
